How to replicate Dooo's guitar tone? Sounds like some combination of fuzz, overdrive, delay, and wah? It doesn't matter if it's not perfect, but does anyone have hints on how to get generally close to the tone? And do you think there's a wah being actively moved with Dooo's foot while soloing?

: just bought fender usa standard strat and can't wait to play it through my marshall mg15dfx with vox v847 wah, and original dallas arbiter fuzz face, can you recomend any set ups ie, which pick ups tones settings of guitar and amp etc, cheers bro, richard.Ive got a fat strat, crybaby, fuzz face reissue, and out of my little 15w fender i got some good tones. Try these:Spanish Castle Magic-Fuzz Face- (Since i have a reissue i dont have germanium transistors which were in the originals. When i crank my fuzz all the way it gets so deep that i cant even play 3 lowest strings, they get very fuzzy.

I think the originals sounded much better but ive never played one i just heard talk about it. So to compensate, i increased the treble and lowered bass. This is just what works for me)volume knob pointing at the lower left corner of the letter 'I' from the 'IN' sticker. And the fuzz knob pointing directly to the right horizontal. Maybe a little more up or down depends on how intense you want the fuzz.Gain-2 to 2.5Volume-slightly less than 5Treble- 9 to 10Mid- slightly more tha 5Bass- between 2 and 3.Purple Haze:Same Fuzz Face setting but try increasing the 'Fuzz'Increase Gain to about 3Lower treble 5-7Mid- about 5Bass- 2-3For the solo he activated his wah and kept it to the highest setting(most trebley) and used a roger mayer octavia for a higher pitched overtone. Certain parts of the solo he either lowered the wah or switched to neck pickup.Try that for starters.

If i have time ill try to get some more. Just sit down and listen to a song, pause it and adjust repeatedly until its good. Then write down the settings in a little notebook. All I know is that both men use numerous devices to achieve their amazing tone. The best place to start would probably involve buying a Mark II C+ Head (Petrucci.pretty expensive) or a Carvin Legacy(Vai.Actually not too bad of a price.Carvin Rules). I would give you some setting suggestions if I knew what kind of amp you have. That plays a huge role in defining your tone.

Also check out Petrucci and Vai's websites. Petrucci's has a message board where you can ask him questions.

You could post a question for John himself and he will eventually answer. I'm not so sure about Vai, but it's worth a shot. Either way, go visit their sites, they both have some valuable info on them. : All I know is that both men use numerous devices to achieve their amazing tone. What do you play through and where do you set your amp and tone knobs? I ask because Ive been experimenting with this more lately and have found a really sweet spot with my set up that I thought Id share. I play mostly a blues rock type of thing with strong jazz influence and hints of funk, avant garde, and fingerstyle. This was my setupGuitar - tone knobs both set to 8.Amp - Vibrolux Reverb - Volume 3.5, Treble 6, Bass 4.5, reverb 2.5, Bright offOverdrive - Prince of tone.

Gain 60%, Tone 70%After playing with some stuff last night I have found a new setup that to my ears is much more superior. It actually feels like im playing through a different and better guitar and amp.Guitar - tone knobs both set at 5.5Amp - volume 3.5, Treble 8, Bass 4, reverb 2.5, Bright offOverdrive - Prince of tone Gain 60%, Tone 80%What a difference. Im curious how others approach your settings. I have a super simple rig, so I work the tone and volume on the guitar more than the amp. I set the amp (18 Watt head) for a good base tone with my main guitar (Les Paul), and when I switch to the Strat I'm usually about 9 on the volume and work from there.

Tone to taste. I also have a blender setup on mine, so the master tone gets bumped around a lot when I'm changing pickups. I'll switch to the bridge from the neck (or vice versa) then fiddle with the tone knob until I like what I'm hearing. Done on the fly at a gig, it takes a few seconds, but it's well worth the effort.

Used nissan ud trucks. Been out in northern california for the last couple months and only have my strat. Usually I'd play my solo gigs with my ES 175 back in minneapolis, but out here since I only have my strat and a blackface princeton type amp (super larry super sport ) I've had to make do with those for the solo gigs. So I've been messing with my tone controls and pickup sectors trying to figure it out. Landed on the 4th position (neck and middle) with the upper tone control down a couple notches to 8 and the bottom tone control (closer to the bridge) on 7 or so. This seems to calm it down and it's not so brash and harsh.

Easy to sing to.On the amp; treble on 2 -3 and bass on 5 or 6. Reverb on 3 or so.Worked pretty good for the first couple shows.

A few months ago I would have said I'd never play a solo show with a strat. But it works better than I would have thought. The almighty Stratocaster. Amp settings: Presence 9:00, Bass 8:00, Mid and Treble dimed, inputs internally jumpered and both volumes on about 2:00. PPIMV around 10:00-12:00 depending on venue, etc. I play through a modded 1987 plexi circuit into a closed back 2x12 with C Rex speakers so this isn't nearly as bright as you'd think.Guitar settings: I only have two guitars and they're both strats, one with Fender Hot Noiseless pickups and the other with Texas Specials.

The Hot Noiseless tone stays right around 7-8. Texas Specials are around 5-6 as a starting point. Volume knob is all over the place depending on the part of the song, how hard I'm digging in, etc. If I'm straight into the amp I typically have the volumes rolled back to about half for cleaner sounds and maybe around 8-9 for a 'thwack' type of crunch. I run a non-MOSFET FullDrive II for 'big' dirt (pedal volume and tone at 2:00, mid switch on vintage mode), and if I'm using that I'm typically running the guitar volumes fairly high (8-9).

Only time I dime them with or without pedals is for solos. It took me a year or so of gigging but the strat-plexi combo works best for what I do because of all the sounds I can get with minimal equipment. The numbers on my amps are too varied, but I adjust the amps with the bridge pickup around 5/6 and the neck around 6/7. Both are where the tone is rolled off to a neutral type tone. Listening closely, it's the point where the tone almost slightly wahs as you roll the tone off from 10.and not a number. I do mark the knobs cause I need glasses to read the numbers. My amps are set slightly scooped then, but sound fairly trebley at that point when I roll the tone up and smooth down below that point.Makes sense to me anyway!
